Preface

China's Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcasting standard (DTMB) is an innovative system for terrestrial digital television broadcasting and broadband transmission. It depends on late-development advantages to create a large number of proprietary technologies. DTMB standard supports TV reception either fixation or movement, its overall performance has exceeding other international TV standards. Major advantages of DTMB standard are high efficiency for spectrum, fast synchronization for signals, high sensitivity for signal reception, high expansibility for broadband television transmission.

1.DTMB standard has a creative technology “Time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing” (TDS-OFDM), which is the key technology of DTMB standard and different with the multicarrier technology from DVB-T or ISDB-T standard. TDS-OFDM may acquire fleetly codec rate and make it fast synchronized by a hybrid processing on time domain and frequency domain.

2.PN sequence of TDS-OFDM has 20 dB gain for channels estimation since it can be a header of frame to fill guard interval. So the efficiency of spectrum increases 10% by using this high protection for transmission. In addition, this reliable synchronization and channel estimation technology can be extended to the applications of base station identification and terminal location.

3. Fast channel estimation technology improves the reliabilities of mobile TV reception by “orthogonal algorithm” and “Fourier transform”.

4. Error correction technology to increase 10% threshold value of signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio for multicarrier transmission.

5. Frame structure synchronized with absolute time. One of protocols in TDS-OFDM system is a multi-frame structure, which is synchronized with absolute time to activate “wake-up” function automatically on portable TV receivers, therefore, this technology is not only for saving much power to portable devices but also for setting up single frequency network simply.
